International Kite Festival, Long Beach WA

With summer quickly coming to an end, we decided to take advantage of one of Dee's final four day breaks before school resumed, and take a family trip to the Washington coast. We headed to Long Beach where they were hosting their famed International Kite Festival with visions of Magnus in awe over thousands of kites. To make a long story short, we weren't exactly reserving our room for next year now upon departure. On day one we endured a speeding ticket (apparently cops in Long Beach don't know about policeman etiquette when it comes to traffic infractions from a firefighter), a disappointing showing of kites (there were about 15 in all), a terrible dinner that seemed to be showcasing Velveeta cheese within every meal, a near concussion from Magnus, an average hotel room to say the least, and to top it all off, a child that was determined to stay up all night for the first time in months (mind you we were in a hotel so there wasn't the possibility to just have him "cry it out" and fall asleep.) It was almost humorous, until Dee was putting his clothes on at 4 a.m. to take Magnus for a drive around Long Beach with the hopes that he would finally settle down and go to sleep. We survived, but the next morning we were packing our things a day early and thinking of heading home (we could not bare to think of another sleepless night). Luckily, my mom was at her beach house in Gearhart (about an hours drive) and we made a detour to visit her for a day since we were so close. Our trip ended with a lovely visit with my mom and a chance for her to see Magnus once again.
On day two, the kite festival improved dramatically.

This was Magnus' first experience with sand, which was the highlight of his time in Long Beach.
Of course he had to taste the sand, which he quickly discovered was not quite as tasty as he had thought.
We enjoyed walking out to the ocean--Magnus was definitely not intimidated by the water and we all got a little wet from the waves.
